Exhibition on Life after Survival of Holocaust to Open at United Nations Headquarters, 26 January

Note No. 6468
25 January 2016

Exhibition on Life after Survival of Holocaust to Open at United Nations Headquarters, 26 January

The exhibition “Life after Survival” will open with a formal ceremony at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, 26 January, in the Visitors’ Lobby (Gallery A) at United Nations Headquarters in New York.  The exhibition will be on display until 12 February.

The exhibition is part of a week-long series of Holocaust remembrance activities at the United Nations.  The International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, 27 January, will be observed under the theme “The Holocaust and Human Dignity”.

“Life after Survival” shows how a small international group of volunteers — the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration Team 182 — worked for the benefit of young Holocaust survivors in Kloster Indersdorf, a convent near Dachau.  There, they established the first international children’s centre for unaccompanied and displaced children in the American zone of post-war Germany.  They provided food, shelter, medical care and helped young people reconnect with their relatives or migrate to Israel.

The United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration was created at a 44-nation conference, held at the United States White House, on 9 November 1943.  Its mission was to provide economic assistance to European nations after the Second World War and to repatriate and assist refugees under Allied control, largely funded by the United States.  In 1947, its tasks were taken over by the International Refugee Organization, a temporary specialized agency of the newly formed United Nations, which was succeeded by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in 1952.

The exhibition is organized by the Concentration Camp Memorial Site Flossenbürg in Germany.  It is endorsed by the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations in cooperation with the non-governmental organizations Heimatverein Indersdorf and Lagergemeinschaft Dachau.

Cristina Gallach, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, will welcome guests to the exhibit’s opening ceremony, which will include remarks by Felix Klein, Special Representative for relations with Jewish organizations in the federal Government of Germany; Karl Freller, Member of the Bavarian State Parliament, former Vice-Minister and Director of the Bavarian Memorial Foundation; Shmuel Reinstein, a Holocaust survivor; and Anna Andlauer, curator of the exhibition.

A video and a short performance will precede the remarks.  The video documents what is known about the lives of the children hosted in the Relief and Rehabilitation Administration centre.  The song recounts what kept the children alive during those dark years.

Holocaust remembrance activities at the United Nations are led by the Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme of the Department of Public Information.  The Programme, established by General Assembly resolution 60/7, was developed to encourage Holocaust education and remembrance in order to help prevent future acts of genocide.  For more information, please contact Kimberly Mann, Chief, Education Outreach Section, United Nations Department of Public Information, at e-mail:  mann@un.org; or visit www.un.org/holocaustremembrance.

The Visitors’ Lobby is open to the public Monday through Friday in January and February from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.  A government-issued photo identification is required.
