The Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme and
the United Nations Information Centres

The Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme provides the network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs), Services (UNIS) and Offices (UNOs) in over 60 countries with guidelines on Holocaust commemoration days, teaching manuals on Holocaust education, combating intolerance and educational documentaries to promote the lessons of the Holocaust in order to help to prevent future acts of genocide.

UNICs Holocaust Remembrance Activities

Every year the global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs), United Nations Information Service (UNIS) and United Nations Offices (UNO) observe the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust in partnership with civil society groups and Government representatives. Events at UN Information Centres range from solemn ceremonies, to film screenings, text message campaigns and a tree planting to honour the victims of the Holocaust.

UNICs Regional Training Seminars

Soon after its inception, the Holocaust Programme organized four regional training programmes to support the outreach efforts of United Nations Information Centres. In 2007-2008, the Programme organized four week-long training programmes for National Information Officers from the global network of United Nations Information Centres. The training programmes were designed to give staff in the field the tools they needed to organize meaningful and effective memorial and educational events. Staff could then integrate these principles into outreach activities aspiring to combat Holocaust denial and promote respect for diversity and human rights.

As a result of these seminars and the ongoing guidance provided by the Holocaust Programme, the number of field offices organizing Holocaust Remembrance Day observances increased from 12 in 2007 to 42 in 2014, and the number of activities increased from 12 in 2007 to 125 in 2014.
