‘If you want to protect your image, protect children,’ Ban tells debate on war-affected children

2 August – With children continuing to be tortured, maimed, imprisoned, starved, sexually abused and killed in armed conflict, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today called on all countries to back their words with concrete actions to end such violations.

Breastfeeding within hour of birth provides baby’s ‘first vaccine,’ says UNICEF

29 July – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned today that some 77 million of the world’s newborns – or 1 in 2 – are not breastfed within the first hour of birth, depriving them of essential nutrients and antibodies and thus exposing them to an increased risk of death.

Concerned by amended child labour bill in India, UN agency urges stronger legal framework

27 July – Voicing concern over the amended Child Labour Bill in India which could legitimize family work and further disadvantage children from poor families, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has urged the removal of certain provisions and establishing a robust monitoring mechanism with a thorough list of hazardous occupations for a stronger child protection framework.

Gender equality, women's empowerment central to Colombian peace process – UN officials

26 July – Two senior United Nations officials today underscored that the centrality of women to the Colombian peace process, as shown by the 'historic commitment' by the Government and Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army (FARC-EP) at the Havana Peace Talks Table, must be reinforced in the final agreement and, more importantly, during the implementation phase.

Recent attacks on hospitals in Aleppo &#39can amount to war crimes' – UNICEF

26 July – The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reiterated today that attacks on health facilities are a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and can amount to war crimes, in response to the recent airstrikes on four hospitals and a blood bank in eastern Aleppo city in Syria.

Somalia: UN envoy calls for better protection of children affected by armed conflict

22 July – Concluding a six-day visit to Somalia, a United Nations child rights envoy has called for better protection of children caught up in armed conflict, urging the country's authorities to treat former child soldiers as victims in need of protection rather than as criminals.

Syria: After week of ‘horrific’ incidents, UNICEF calls for end to all violence against children

21 July – In a week marked by the brutal on-camera murder of a 12-year-old boy in Aleppo and the killing of more than 20 children killed during air strikes in Manbij, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called for an immediate end to all forms of violence against children in Syria and urged all parties to the conflict there to make every effort to avoid the loss of civilian lives.

19 July – About a quarter of a million children in Borno state, north-eastern Nigeria, are suffering from severe malnutrition, the United Nations children’s agency today announced. Of those, about one in five will die if they do not receive treatment.

18 July – An average of 29 adolescents between the ages of 15 and 19 are infected with HIV every hour, according to the United Nations Children's Fund, which is calling for a redoubling of prevention and treatment efforts.
