United Nations Forum on Forests

The Secretariat is the UN DESA focal point on all forest policy and forest-based sustainable development issues. It promotes sustainable forest management based on the 2030 Agenda, the Agenda 21, the Rio Declaration, Forest Principles, Global Objectives on Forests, and the UN Forest Instrument. It provides substantive support to the annual sessions of the Forum, prepares technical reports and analytical studies, and fosters dialogue to enhance cooperation and coordination on forest issues. It provides a comprehensive and integrated view of forests which encompasses economic, social and environmental aspects.

Main Activities

  • Provide support to the United Nations Forum on Forests, a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with universal membership;
  • Promote, monitor and assess the implementation of sustainable forest management, in particular the UN Forest Instrument, the Global Objectives on Forests and forest related Sustainable Development Goals and targets;
  • Facilitate access to financing for sustainable forest management through the UNFF Secretariat-managed Global Forest Financing Facilitation Network;
  • Raise awareness of the contributions of forests in achieving the Sustainable Development Goal;
  • Promote coherence, coordination and cooperation on forests, including by serving as a member and secretariat of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests and by liaising with the secretariats of the Rio conventions; and
  • Promote high-level political engagement in support of sustainable forest management with the participation of Major Groups and other stakeholders.
