Colombia: UN mission begins working to verify compliance with historic peace deal
30 September – Nine representatives of the Government of Colombia, as well as nine members from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia–People's Army (FARC-EP) and 18 international observers from the UN mission in the country have started working together at the joint Monitoring and Verification Mechanism headquarters in Bogota.
Rural Latin American and Caribbean areas need targeted agricultural policies, investments – UN
30 September – Economic growth is not enough to eliminate poverty in rural areas of Latin America and the Caribbean, and governments need targeted policies and investments for agricultural development and correct historic inequality experienced by millions of people across the region, says a United Nations report released today.
Colombia: UN human rights chief reaffirms ongoing collaboration in wake of peace accord
29 September – Speaking to the media just days after the signing of the historic peace agreement in Colombia and ahead of the 2 October national poll in which Colombians will have their say on the accord, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights reiterated that his Office (OHCHR) will continue to follow the progress of the human rights aspects of the agreement.
UN health agency declares elimination of measles in the Americas
28 September – The region of the Americas is the first in the world to have eliminated measles, a viral disease that can cause severe health problems, the United Nations health agency has declared.
UNESCO chief condemns killing of Mexican community radio host
27 September – The head of the United Nations agency tasked with defending press freedom today expressed indignation at the killing of community radio host Agustin Pavia Pavia in the Mexican state of Oaxaca on 13 September.
As Colombians bid farewell to ‘decades of flames,’ Ban pledges UN support to historic peace deal
26 September – Colombians are “bidding farewell to decades of flames and sending up a bright flare of hope that illuminates the world,” United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today in Cartagena, welcoming the signing by the Government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – People's Army (FARC-EP) of a peace deal ending more than 50 years of conflict.
Caribbean leaders, at UN Assembly, decry new financial rules; stress UN role in development
26 September – Declaring that Caribbean countries are being treated “as if they are hell on earth” due to new financial rules against tax havens, Bahamian Foreign Minister Frederick Mitchell mounted the podium of the United Nations General Assembly today to denounce the “immoral” withdrawal of normal banking services that inflict hardship on ordinary citizens.
Achieving Global Goals ‘not about ticking boxes,’ Dominica tells UN, urging action on climate, environment
24 September – As the world sharpened its focus on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it must recognize the stakes for small island developing States, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Dominica told the United Nations today, noting that the 2030 Agenda must drive action on climate change, environmental protection and access to clean energy, all critical concerns for Caribbean countries.

24 September – Given their size and limited choices for economic expansion, small island States like St Lucia have looked to the more advanced economies for innovative means of economic development, the tiny country’s Prime Minister told the United Nations today, among many speakers from the region who said they now find themselves being penalized as tax havens by the very architects of such strategies.
