ID2020 Summit 2016

20 May 2016, New York

On Friday, 20 May 2016, ID2020 – a strategic, global initiative launched in response to the Sustainable Development Goal 16.9: “provide legal identity to all, including birth registration, by 2030”, in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Partnerships, hosted the “ID2020 Summit – Harnessing Digital Identity for the Global Community” at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Around one-fifth of the world’s population (1.8 billion people) is without legal identity, which deprives them of access to healthcare, schools, shelter, justice, and other government services. Commonly affected groups include refugees displaced by war, territorial disputes, victims of famine, societal outcasts, global disorder, political instability, competition for resources and climate change.
In the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by world leaders in 2015, with the overarching goal to leave no one behind, the need to enable people who suffer legal, political, social and economic exclusion to obtain official identity is clear. In response to this global need, the ID2020 Summit convened leaders and representatives from the private sector, governments, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, policy analysts and thought leaders to build cross-sectoral partnerships that contribute to provide all invisible and vulnerable people with legal identity by 2030, to make them visible and restore them into society.
Featured speakers include, among others:

The U.S Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the UN Office for Partnerships jointly convened a successful event “The Business of Inclusion: Global Prosperity through Women and Girls Empowerment” on the 7 March 2016 at the United Nations Headquarters.

The event allowed more than 400 participants from corporations, non-governmental organizations, and multilateral institutions to explore different practices to empower girls and women in businesses.

As stated by the speakers, we are moving forward in the combat for gender equality, yet statistics show that women and girls are much more vulnerable than their male counterpart, notably in the poorest and conflict areas where they are more exposed to violence, harassment and other types of physical assaults. Moreover, gender gap in terms of employment, wage, social protection and pension, working hours… is significant not only in developing countries but also in more affluent nations.
The event was filled with the energy of leaders from public-private sectors interested in engaging both men and women to take action for gender equality in the post-2015 era, in enhancing the role of the private sector in women empowerment in business. Despite many positive results thus far, there is an acknowledgement that many challenges remains. It is important to understand that women’s empowerment in business is not just a matter of corporate social responsibility, but one that leads the way in creating more inclusive world.
