UNESCO promotes the advancement of the natural sciences to achieve peace and sustainable development. UNESCO aims to strengthen science, technology and innovation systems and policies nationally regionally and globally through targeted activities in science policy development, innovation and developing links between science, policy and society. Capacity development and the generation and sharing of knowledge in the basic sciences, engineering and renewable energy are all focus areas. UNESCO also aims to promote international scientific cooperation on critical environmental challenges to sustainable development in the fields of freshwater, terrestrial ecosystems, earth resources and disaster risk reduction. Priorities include gender equality, Africa, Small Island Developing States and the mobilization of local and indigenous knowledge. Click here for more.

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC)

The IOC, established in 1960 as a body with functional autonomy within UNESCO, is the only specialized organization for marine sciences and capacity development within the UN system. The Commission promotes coordination and international cooperation in ocean research, observations, services, and capacity-development. It collaborates with relevant international organizations, especially within the United Nations system, and helps its Member States to develop knowledge about the nature and resources of the ocean and coastal areas in order to support sustainable development, protection of the marine environment, and informed marine-related management and decision-making.
