Promotion of Information Literacy in the South Caucasus

This brief reports on progress made in the Information Literacy in the South Caucasus project, funded by UNESCO's Information for All Programme, and, in particular, the series of three workshops held at the Caucasus Research Resource Centres (CRRC) in Yerevan, Armenia from 27 February to 2 March; Baku, Azerbaijan from 29 to 31 March and Tbilisi, Georgia from 3 to 5 April.
The overall goal of the workshops was to establish and strengthen information literacy programmes and information management strategies of participating institutions via building the capacity of librarians to undertake information literacy training programmes. The key objectives of the workshop were to:
During the workshop and after, participants were required to compile a list of useful resources concerning information literacy and international developments in information literacy. This material will include guidelines, reports, programmes, tutorials, discussion groups, articles and organizations and associations.
The use of wikis post-workshops is being explored to help participants collaborate and share ideas with each other and the facilitator. The facilitator is also available via e-mail for advice to help participants develop their plans. Participants from these workshops will meet again later in the year September / October in three follow-up workshops in each country, when they will report on progress made in implementing an information literacy strategy in their library.
- review existing information skills activities in the host institutions of participants;
- introduce participants to concepts of information literacy;
- practise information literacy skills in the electronic environment and,
- collaboratively develop strategies for the implementation of information literacy programmes within the host institutions of participants.
