SURVEY DETAILS :

QUESTIONS & FEEDBACKS:

Question 1. Forum messages are posted once every 10 days. Do you read:
All of them / Some of them / None

Feedback: 34% of the respondents read all messages, 59% read some, 5% read none, and 2% abstentions.

Question 2. Do you forward the information to other people?
All the time / Sometimes / Never

Feedback: 5.6% of the respondents forward all of the messages, 68% forward the messages sometimes, 24.6% never forward the messages, with 1.5% abstentions.

Question 3. Have you personally contributed to the forum? Yes / No
If yes, how often?
If no, why not?

Feedback:

15% of the respondents had already contributed to the Forum, contributed often (60% of contributing people), about 3 times (10% of contributing people), twice (16% of contributing people) and once (34% of contributing people).

The respondents who had not contributed (85%) gave as reasons: lack of time; lack of experience and/or background knowledge; no occasion so far; already so many info sources around in today’s society; no direct interest and relation to posted subjects; not sure on what aspect contribution could be realized; feeling of having nothing useful or substantial to contribute; contributors cover comments adequately; only recently joined; unsure how to do contribute; difficult to read because containing sometimes unreadable letters; people from the UK and US dominate these debates; perception that it is for less developed nations; in Forum only for information; still evaluating topics; prefer to read the opinion of others; currently no own research

Question 5.
Has the forum influenced:
a) Your understanding of coastal problems? Yes / No
Your views about wise coastal practices Yes / No
Your application of wise coastal practices? Yes / No
b) Other aspects?
c) Additional Comments, if any:

Feedback 5a):

(‘No’ means either ‘no’ or ‘no answer at all’)

The Forum influences the understanding of coastal problems in 78% of the respondents, the views about wise coastal practices in 73%, and the application of wise coastal practices in 43.6% of the respondents.

Feedback 5b):
  • «Hard to answer; new information has been given, which could be compiled and that's it»;
  • «The question on the influence on application is hard to answer; since not (yet) in a position where practices can be applied; or most examples seen in the forum have grass-roots approach, rather than institutional; yes and no: many contributions are related to limited areas (Caribbean, Small Island of Pacific Ocean and some others)»
  • «Very useful source of information; updated and recent; improves knowledge of some areas and case studies»;
  • «Information material useful for lectures, citing them from the websites» ;
  • «Influence on teaching of topics; forum has provided global insight on matters that require sound decisions (e.g. conservation of biodiversity and environmental security)»
  • «To read about others' experiences has given some ideas and stimulated discussion among people»
  • «Information utilized for publishing different articles in daily news and reviews in different regions of the world, demonstrating the importance taken by ICM regarding climate problems and globalisation; contributed in different parliaments from the governments with the examples exposed in this forum to improve and create a plan on the ICM (contribution from Germany)
  • «Influence on environmental assessments»
  • «Influence on prevention, risk evaluation and even mitigation of coastal issues, understanding of the diversity of problems/contexts and solutions and the need for promotion of this knowledge globally»
  • «Influence to wider perspective, similarities with other countries can be seen; widens knowledge, helps making your mind up about things; raises awareness on management activities; better knowledge of practices in other countries»
  • «Forum helps in having a richer vision of own job; its mission is very useful, communicating many social and professional experiences»
  • «Receiving the messages in English, French, and Spanish assists in building up the appropriate vocabulary in those languages»
  • «Useful unreported examples on island tourism»
  • «Opens eyes to more global issues, learned about places previously little known or unknown; application very specific to the region, so many issues in forum not always applicable here»
  • «CSI project has given realization that both traditional knowledge and modern science can be used for harmonious development; it has been very educational in thinking out the different definitions of 'sustainable development' and 'sustainable living'»
  • «Informative to know what is happening in other parts of the world; learned that coastal problems are worldwide and solutions are also much the same»
