On the Spot Radio Program, Tonga

Ebonie Fifita and 'On the Spot' developed radio shows focusing on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Their objective was to inform the young people of Tonga and the entire community about the MDGs and how these goals specifically relate to the Pacific region and what action can be taken to help achieve them.

The shows were aired once a week for ten weeks which coincided with constant interruption from state funerals and inconsistent support from the national radio station. However, the results were both surprising and inspiring.

Statistics from the surveys carried out showed that only 25% felt that Tongan television was ‘good’, and only 22% felt that Tongan radio was ‘good’, the rest believing that there is a definite need for more income generating activities and training programmes, with only 19% believing development in these areas is currently sufficient for the needs of the local youth. Consequently, a need for consolidation and extension of this project through further use of the mediums of radio or television is desired.

The activities of this project included:

  • Designing, printing and distributing posters and flyers advertising 'On the Spot' MDG themes and airtime;
  • Promotional activity of painting a van with MDG themes and airtime;
  • Setting up an MDG stall at the Saturday morning fair. This was an inspiration that was very successful and was their real ‘On the Spot’ contact with the general public.
  • Locating and purchasing bulk t-shirts and screen printing them with their ‘On the Spot’ logo.
  • Successfully attracting sponsorship from the local community to donate competition and achievement prizes;
  • Planning the content of each show (script, music, interviews and competitions)’
  • Arranginge interviews from as many sources as possible in relation to views, goals and current local, national and international activities related to MDGs.
  • Creating awareness of the MDGs amongst the local musicians and requesting new and original compositions to air as part of the ‘On the Spot’ radio shows.
  • Participating in the World Clean-up Day;

"As youth working on this project it was a constant challenge to be taken seriously. Our format, style and content were new and experimental to Tongan radio. Even though EIKI Entertainment was very supportive and encouraging of the project, we did not always feel that we had complete ownership and creative control of the final content of each show. We would have liked to have had more opportunity to develop our own production and editing skills." - Ebonie

On the Spot aims to achieve the following in the near future:

  • Registering 'On the Spot' as a registered NGO;
  • Providing MDG workshops for young people and assisting them in obtaining funding, grants and sponsorship for action projects;
  • Organising events for young people to promote local talent, keeping traditional cultural arts alive and developing new art forms;
  • Providing a MDG Awareness Road Show to schools of Tonga;
  • Networking with other Pacific island youth organizations and participating in international events (i.e. YSF – Youth for a Sustainable Future, Pacific Arts Festivals);
  • Establishing a youth centre that provides opportunities for youth to develop and improve their skills in the performing arts, art media, eco-tourism and traditional studies. The overall aim is to raise the standards of these activities in Tonga and as a means of generating income for youth.
