For this year’s WPFD celebrations, the Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA) and the Thai Journalists Association (TJA) would like to underscore the importance of Thai media-- be there the traditional or the new media-- in Thailand’s current political turmoil. The organizations propose, therefore, to follow-up on its last year’s campaign platform that focused on the role of Thai media in putting an end to political conflicts.
TJA underscores that the local media is facing a number of threats and challenges to their profession, having to work in the environment of severe political hostility and the exploitation of new media by opposing political camps to sway public opinion. More importantly, given this environment, there is a need to discuss how the media could meet its duty to inform—and to protect and enhance the public’s right to information—while also helping to bridge a social division over the future of Thai politics and providing a platform for the peaceful settlement of the conflicts.
On the 3rd May 2010 the organizations will announce a joint media statement and recommendation to the Government at the Government House at 8 am. They will organize an academic seminar and an award presenting ceremony for best essays at the Thai Journalists Association. Following the meeting there will be a walk campaign. The walk line will start from Bangkok Arts Center via BTS skywalk, Siam Center’s plaza and Siam Paragon Department Store’s plaza. The three walk teams will distribute pens and papers to bystanders to write their comments about the role of media and give away pins to those respondents. These opinions will be collated and analyzed further. The public opinion may be sought further online via TJA website.
