Velasco

by Guido Rodríguez Alcalá (born in 1946)

Summary: This is a fictionalized biography of Bernardo de Velasco, the last Spanish governor of Paraguay. The novel recounts the events which led to the revolution of 14 May 1811 and the events immediately afterwards. In the revolution of 14 May Paraguay gained its independence from Spain. It is Velasco, removed from his office as governor, who recounts the events and his thoughts reflect his personal view of those troubled times in which one system disappeared and another was born. Without identifying with the views of the character, the author lets him express himself without falling into stereotypes.

Reason for the choice: Velasco is the first attempt by a Paraguayan novelist to analyse the independence movement within its proper historical context. The book avoids Manichean approaches and denigrates neither cultures nor peoples. The protagonist is not a monster but rather an individual overwhelmed by circumstances. At the same time, Velasco understands the difficulties that any government, colonial or independent, will have in creating a fairer system. Thus, an actual official, through the magic of narrative, helps us to understand basic questions of American life.
