Margosatubig

by Ramon Muzones

Summary of the book:  (Margosatubig is a name of a place). Datu Mohamed has usurped the throne, forced the king into exile, and thereby caused the king’s death.  The king’s son, Salagunting, whose struggles to wrest the throne from the usurper are further complicated by other contenders to the throne.  There is also a contest for supremacy between Salagunting and Datu Mohamed’s daughter Morgana, who has the power of black magic.  After learning that freedom can be gained only through constant vigilance, Salagunting finally establishes himself beyond doubt as the true sultan of Magindanaw and Sulu.  He then succeeds in rendering Morgana’s black magic impotent and wins her love thereby. (Margosatubig is a name of a place, therefore cannot be translated)

Reasons for this choice:  It falls within the parameters of the UNESCO; less known works by a Filipino writer, high artistic merit, worthy of translation to introduce to an international readership.
