Tajikistan: Training for Trainers on Combating Hate Speech

School of Peacemaking and Media Technology in Central Asia organize training-workshop in Bishkek.

The training aims to establish the professional trainers’ team from local media experts, journalists, editors who will be able to train the Tajik participants to combat hate speech in the media and on the Internet.
Online consultations by skype will be organized after the workshop on the following topics: development of the local training materials; conducting research and analysis of the media sphere for hate speech.

10-12 media trainers will be trained at the 3 three-day training workshop in Bishkek. All participants will be selected on the gender equality principles so that men and women are represented equally. All participants should speak local languages for further successful training of beneficiaries in the regions.

The training will consist from two parts:
a) one and half day will focus on learning of participants to the trainers’ skills and methods, presenting new journalism practices for overcome hate speech and propaganda, understanding how to use online content covering the conflict-sensitive issues, expansion of tolerance and creation of self-regulation tools for media;
b) one and half day will dedicate for training on tools for monitoring and analysis of hate speech in the print, broadcast and online media outlets and social networks, identification stereotypes, dehumanizing metaphors and ad hominem attacks to different groups.
On the last day of training, every participant will prepare a draft program for his/her future workshop on site. Finally, 10-12 drafts for local training workshops will be prepared. Every trained media trainer, based on acquired skills, will have to train 10 participants in the country.

The trainings' tool kit will be developed using available learning modules of UNESCO, Council of Europe, and School of Peacemaking and Media Technology in Central Asia and focused on local conditions and subculture. In additional, the textbook will contain the tools to overcome hate speech, a checklist for tolerance for journalists, mechanisms to reduce the potential harm from a malicious online, cases study.

The intensive workshop will be followed by long-term continuous mentoring support by on-line consultations for the development of training materials, conducting research and analysis of the media sphere in Tajikistan for hate speech.
