What is digital art in Africa

While this covers a wide range of production from interactive installations to websites as artworks and digital video productions, it does not include the scanning or documenting, cataloguing and marketing of traditional art forms. The digital technology needs to be a part of the artwork, without which the work would not exist.

Within the DigiArts AFRICA definition, one needs to acknowledge that the lack of exposure to such works and its current debate due to limited resources and exclusion through the digital knowledge divide, the scope of this term needs to be extended.

In order to promote the development of Digital Art amongst people that have not had the luxury of contributing and expanding the ideas of working with digital technologies, it is proposed that the definition of the term addresses those practices that have the potential for including both digital and artistic production.

Computer design, video, film, stop frame animation, digital photography and creative digital software and hardware experiments have the strong potential of developing digital art with the education of the maker, who, through this production, is contributing a step towards digital art production in Africa.

Creative thinking around Information and Communication Technologies and its knowledge societies as well as building networks should also be considered in the push for a DigiArts AFRICA network that enhances communication and digital presentation of local culture through creative production and digital exchange.

Digital Art is a term used to categorize forms of art (visual, text, sound,
performance) that involve the use of computer or digital technologies for the production or performance of the work.
