Haiti, in the heart of the Slave Route

The Slave Route Project was launched in 1994 on the initiative of Haiti and of UNESCO’s Member States.

The programme places Haiti on the forefront of the world’s historical stage, significantly recognizing its unique identity.

During the early stages of reconstruction, UNESCO will give priority to the protection of the National Archives of Haiti and the restoration of Haiti’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage, much of which bears witness to the slave trade and slavery. 

Its actions will build upon the outcomes of recent activities, namely:

A special session of the International Conference on « History, Memory and the Raprochement of Cultures » will be devoted to Haiti’s crucial role in these contexts.
