Cooperation between the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and UNESCO involves matters of cultural heritage first and foremost.

Apart from a single site inscribed on the World Heritage List, and which is partly in need of restoration following the conflict of the 1990s, the country possesses very many sites that were also damaged during the fighting. UNESCO has initiated long-term cooperation with the country, aimed at assisting national heritage protection services to carry out restoration work on the various cultural properties and ensuring their subsequent conservation and management.

The country is a State Party to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and participates in workshops organized with the support of the UNESCO Venice Office and designed to identify, preserve and promote its living heritage.

The field of arts and cultural enterprise is oriented towards poetry - the Struga Festival -, promotion of copyright and the fight against piracy.

Intercultural dialogue, the fight against the illicit trafficking of cultural property and the promotion of cultural diversity are the others areas in which the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia cooperates with UNESCO. It also actively participates in the workshops and conferences organized with the support of the UNESCO Venice Office to enhance collaboration between the countries of South-East Europe.
