Cuba: Round Table to prepare the XX International Book Fair in the framework of the International Year of People of African Descent

The Round Table will took place on 13 February at 10.00 AM, in the José Antonio Portuondo Hall of the San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress, main venue of the Book Fair.

Placed on the theme: “The United Nations in Cuba and the International Year for the People of African Descent”, it was organized by the United Nations System in Cuba and coordinated by the Regional Office for Culture in latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), as part of its activities for the International Year for the People of African Descent within the XX International Book Fair of Havana.

Participating as speakers are Mr. Herman van Hooff, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean; Mr. José Juan Ortiz Bru, Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF); Mr. Rolando García, Auxiliary Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Dr. Jesús Guanche, Coordinator of the Cuban Scientific Committee of the UNESCO Slave Route Project.

In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the year 2011 as the International Year for People of African Descent and invited all its Member States, the specialized agencies of the United Nations System and the civil society to organize initiatives that could contribute to the success of the celebration. This Round Table is response to this call and opes the was for other initiatives planned.
