La ciudad de Montreal ha sido designada Ciudad del Diseño de la UNESCO el 12 de mayo de 2006.

La ciudad no sólo ha demostrado que el diseño puede ser un poderoso instrumento en la promoción de la integración y la pluralidad de valores, también ha impulsado a sus habitantes a jugar un papel crítico y activo en la movilización del diseño para inspirar entornos de vida más innovadores que mejoran la vida cotidiana y la existencia en general.

Montreal manifiesta un gran potencial de desarrollo social y económico gracias al dinamismo del diseño y no cabe ninguna duda de que los sectores público y privado, y la sociedad civil apoyan fuertemente este crecimiento.
