Learning to read and write in a month!
The Joint Programme proposes innovative approaches to accelerated learning that, through non-formal education opportunities, offers the chance to out-of-school children and illiterate adults (often living in difficult situations) to learn how to read and write in a month and complete the traditional primary education level by compressing the 5 year cycle into just ten months. The success of the programme relies on innovative methods tailored to meet the learning needs of the various age groups of participants, in their specific learning context and conditions.
The Joint Programme, supported by the UN system, the Malagasy Government and other partners, was formulated with the assistance and under the technical coordination of UNESCO. As a follow-up to the Dakar Forum, and within the EFA and the UN Development Assistance (UNDAF) Frameworks, joint programming at the national and international levels for basic education has been launched. It is carried out in collaboration with several United Nations agencies (UNDP, UNFPA, WFP, ILO, UNESCO, UNICEF), under the supervision of the Ministry of Population, involving the following ministries: MJSL, INSTAT, MPRDDPAC, MTPC, MINSAN, MAEP, MICDSP, MINCULT, MESRES. UNESCO serves as the coordinating agency. The programme’s main objective is to improve access and accessibility to ‘basic’ Education for All and to contribute to the attainment of the Dakar World Education Forum goals. This USD 25 million Programme, which has just undergone a mid-term evaluation, entered its second cycle in 2005. |
