Founding Conference of the Arab Federation of UNESCO Clubs

UNESCO supported actively the organization of the founding conference of the Arab Federation of UNESCO Clubs (FEDACLU) held in Alexandria on 28 and 29 May, 2005, aiming at developing and stimulating the UNESCO Clubs movement in the region of Arab States. This Conference has been co-organized by the Tunisian Federation of UNESCO Clubs (FTCUA), the Egyptian National Commission for UNESCO and the Library of Alexandria.
The first day was dedicated to the Opening ceremony and to the creation of FEDACLU and the second day to thematic discussions and to the Closing of the meeting in the presence of 9 representatives of Arab UNESCO Clubs.
Discussions were held on the following subjects:
Cultural Diversity and the World Heritage Convention,
the World Conference for the UNESCO Club Movement (Paris, July 2005
the World Summit on the Information Society (Tunis, November 2005
Mr. Ahmed Sayyad, Assistant Director-General for External Relations and Cooperation, representative of UNESCO, participated in the meeting and chaired the session for the debate and the adoption of the constitution of the Arab Federation,
The election of the Executive board was chaired by Mr. Mohamed Safwat Salam, the Secretary-General of the Egyptian National Commission. After mentioning the mandate of the Executive Board, the participants proceeded to the election, in accordance with the Arab sub regional divisions mentioned in the constitution of the Federation.
Mr. Ahmed Sayyad, Assistant Director-General for External Relations and Cooperation, and Mr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria, were elected Honorable Members of this Federation. Mr. Rachid Ben Slama, President of FTCUA, was elected as President of FEDACLU.
