The Task Force of National Commissions reviews progress in Eura-Arab Dialogue

    The Task Force of National Commissions for Euro-Arab Dialogue met for the second time in Muscat, Oman, on 23 January 2011, on the occasion of the International Conference on Education for Sustainable Development in Support of Cultural Diversity and Biodiversity hosted by the Ministry of Education of Oman.

The meeting was opened by Mrs Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO and H.E Dr Muna Salim Al Jardani, Under-Secretary of Education and Vice-President of the Oman National Commissions for Education, Culture and Science.


In her opening speech, the Director-General underlined the importance of Euro-Arab Dialogue for the promotion of peace, intercultural understanding, Dialogue among Civilizations, Rapprochement of Cultures and Human Values.


During the meeting, the following points were highlighted by the participants:

  • Various activities and projects were reportedly carried out in     different countries of both regions,
  • General consensus was noted for enabling some projects to     be completed with tangible results,
  • Need to consolidate the exchange between the two regions.


    Progress in the projects agreed during the 1st Meeting of the Task Force held in January 2011 was reviewed and follow up actions proposed. More

    European
    National Commissions during the 46th session of the International Conference on Education entitled “Learning to live together” that was held in Geneva on September 2001. The Dialogue coordination was entrusted then to both the German Commission and the Tunisian National Commissions. A Task Force of National Commissions was set up in early 2010 to revitalize this 10 years-long initiative and to monitor its future action.
