One of the principal areas of cooperation between Georgia and UNESCO is the conservation of heritage, in its tangible and intangible forms.
Three Georgian cultural sites are inscribed on the World Heritage List.
Georgian Traditional Polyphony was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2001. Thanks to a specially elaborated safeguarding plan, specialists were able to undertake research and gather information on this tradition as well as creating specialized centres to encourage its transmission to future generations.
In the framework of the intersectoral sub-regional project "Caucasus", Georgia participates in programmes along with Armenia and Azerbaijan. This project reinforces cooperation among these countries in a number of fields including intercultural dialogue, the development of cultural tourism and HIV and AIDS prevention.
