San Andres Archipelago (Colombia)

Situated in the southwestern Caribbean, 800 km north of the coast of Colombia and 200 km east of Nicaragua, the archipelago of San Andrés, Old Providence and Santa Catalina consists of three inhabited islands and several uninhabited cays (see map below). The archipelago has a land area of 57 km2 and an oceanic area of 300,000 km2. The archipelago was declared the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2000. The estimated population of the archipelago is 85,000. The people are descendants of English settlers, African slaves and mainland Colombians. The local currency is the Colombian peso.
