UNESCO reaches out to young tennis champions

UNESCO organized a series of anti-doping activities designed to promote sporting ethics and develop attitudes such as solidarity, fair play and mutual respect during the BNP Paribas Cup Stade Français - Youth Tennis Open, held in Paris from 9-15 July 2007.

At the opening of the UNESCO Village, Justine Henin, spoke to the young athletes about the importance of doping-free sport. The world’s top-ranked tennis player and UNESCO Champion for Sport gave an inspirational speech and answered questions by teenage players from over 50 countries. She conveyed the message that "sport has to be nurtured by passion, by love of the game" and "played with integrity and fair play." For Ms Henin, it was also an opportunity to give back to a tournament which she won as a junior player in 1996. Other activities consisted of athlete outreach and education programmes which sought to instill sporting ethics and values. Information was also provided on prohibited substances and methods and doping control procedures. Paul Marriott-Lloyd, UNESCO Anti-Doping Specialist, stated "it is essential to build resilience as these athletes represent the future of sport. They need quality advice to prepare them for the challenges they will soon face." These activities will be repeated at youth tennis tournaments in Beijing in August and Washington DC in October of this year in partnership with WADA.
