| UNESCO's Global Ethics Observatory starts a database on resources in ethics |
|
UNESCO's Global Ethics Observatory (GEObs) is a system of databases with worldwide coverage in bioethics and other areas of applied ethics in science and technology. It is freely accessible online to all Member States and the general public. UNESCO officially launched the sixth GEObs database on resources in ethics at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, on 30 October 2008.
 This new GEObs database will make resources in ethics available online. It is designed to reinforce ethics teaching, especially in regions where such activities are absent or minimal.
Resources can be accessed and downloaded freely by individual teachers, either as study materials to assist them in the creation of new ethics teaching programmes, or to strengthen existing teaching programmes.
It will also be the repository for study materials of the proposed UNESCO Bioethics Core Curriculum, which sets out to introduce the bioethical principles of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (2005) to university students. Thus, it could facilitate the introduction of ethics teaching in the universities of many countries where such teaching is currently unavailable.
The launch of the database took place during the joint session of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) and the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee (IGBC) at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, on Thursday, 30 October 2008.
GEOBs began operating in December 2005 and has steadily continued to expand. Its five other databases cover experts in ethics (listing 1114 experts to date); ethics institutions (225); ethics teaching programmes (192); ethics related legislation and guidelines (22 states and 461 texts); and codes of conduct (151). The system provides users with an interactive geographical search option and is available in UNESCO’s six official languages.
