The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK), in collaboration with Greenstone Support for South Asia and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), is organizing an International Workshop on Greenstone Digital Library Software at IIMK, Kozhikode, India, from 8 to 13 December 2008.
Padmavibhushan Prof. V. Rajaraman, India’s most renowned information technology expert, inaugurated this advanced training workshop on 8 December 2008. In their inaugural addresses, Prof. Krishna Kumar (Director of IIMK) and Prof. Debadrata Chatterjee (Chair, FDP, IIMK) stressed the importance of deployment of open source software in digital information management in emerging economies.
Over twenty five participants selected for the workshop include delegates from different states of India as well as from Sri Lanka. They belong to various organizations, including universities, business schools, technical institutions, engineering colleges, research institutions, government departments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The objective of the six-day workshop is to offer a rigorous hands-on training in building digital libraries using the Greenstone open source Digital Library Software. The participants will learn how to design digital collections of different publications in a variety of file formats, including multimedia such as audio, video and images. They will undertake assignments to design a small prototype of a library information system containing diverse types of material. At the end of the workshop, they are expected to be confident in developing digital libraries using the Greenstone software. This advanced training is imparted by experienced professionals from IIMK and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) with related theory sessions to provide further background materials. The participants will receive the latest version of Greenstone Digital Library Software and all instructional materials on a CD-ROM in order to enable them to better spread this new technology, upon return to their workplaces. IIMK will also provide the participants with all necessary support in their endeavours to build world class digital libraries, and assure follow up services from its Centre for Development of Digital Libraries (CDDL). CDDL coordinates the Greenstone Support for South Asia which is directed by an expert advisory board, having a representative from the UNESCO Office in New Delhi. Related themes/countries
