The German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ) joined UNESCO’s strategy to produce gender-sensitive media content and to reduce stereotyping in the Maghreb countries. The objective of a fair and balanced transmission of women’s images is to eliminate socially built gender inequalities in the Maghreb region.
The strategy on gender and media, initiated by the UNESCO Office in Rabat, aims at capitalising on media as a powerful tool for transformation of societal practices in order to ensure sustained gender mainstreaming in media content. This strategy provides an integrated framework for cooperation in three key areas:
According the Centre for Arab Women Training and Research (CAWTAR), 78% of women’s images transmitted by Arab media do not reflect adequately the realities. Other experts state that women are less frequently interviewed and their points of views in documentaries are neglected. The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) have already joined UNESCO’s strategy on gender and media.
