UNESCO office in Windhoek in partnership with Polytechnic of Namibia and the Utah Valley State University is organizing a 3 day workshop on the preservation of digital heritage from 20 to 22 July 2010.
The workshop will be followed by a field trip to Opuwo (Kunene region) to extend the intangible heritage of the Digital National Archives collection in Namibia.
The training workshop will be attended by archivists from Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland. These archivists will learn from the expertise and experience of the Digital National Archives in Namibia, Utah Valley College and Polytechnic of Namibia. The National Digital Archives project (DNA) serves to develop digital archiving capacity through collecting, capturing and organizing historical and cultural artifacts, documents, visuals and audio recording. The training workshop will focus specifically on critical elements in establishing digitization projects such as selection policies, conversion policies and techniques, the use of the software Greenstone and the importance of metadata. The field trip by 10 members of the Digital National Archives project will contribute towards the extension of archival material from the region that concern children storytelling, genealogy and regional histories. The Team will use the infrastructure of the Multi-Purpose Community Centre in Okangwati and will also share their experience with the community in recording techniques and collecting intangible heritage and store it as user generated content in the center. UNESCO contributes towards fostering universal access to information and knowledge and the Development of info structure. It is in that regard that the UNESCO Windhoek Office has partnered with the Polytechnic of Namibia and Utah Valley University in these workshops. Related themes/countries
