On 15 August 2010 the UNESCO Office for Iraq made an official presentation of the Media Elections Project to the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) Board at its headquarters in Baghdad. IHEC, together with the Communications and Media Commission (CMC), is one of the key Iraqi stakeholders engaged in the UNESCO-led Media Elections Project.
Entitled "Support for Enhanced Media Coverage and Monitoring of Electoral Processes", the UNESCO project, is aimed at strengthening the electoral processes in Iraq by building the capacity of IHEC, CMC and the professional media in order to enable them to play their respective and complementary roles in providing stakeholders with timely, accurate and impartial information during elections.
IHEC was engaged in organizing on 7 March 2010 elections to the Council of Representatives, which took prominence on the world stage as a defining moment in Iraq's history regarding its establishment as a democratic sovereign nation. The Independent High Electoral Commission was established in 2004 as the Independent Election Commission of Iraq (IECI) by the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) Order 92. In 2007, IECI was renamed IHEC in accordance with Law 11 of the Council of Representatives. IHEC is a professional, independent and neutral commission that is subject to the oversight of the Council of Representatives. ![]() UNESCO’s George Papagiannis presents the Media Elections Project to the IHEC Board.
