On 30 September 2010 the UNESCO Office for Iraq made an official presentation of the Media Elections Project to the Communications and Media Commission of Iraq (CMC) at the Commission office in Baghdad. A significant undertaking for UNESCO, this project aims at strengthening the electoral processes in Iraq by building capacity of Iraqi institutions that play important roles during elections.
“Enhancing the capacities of CMC, the only converged regulator in the region, helps to provide the Iraqi people with the information they need to make informed choices during an electoral process, a critical pillar of democracy,” said George Papagiannis from UNESCO’s Iraq Office during the presentation.
The event was attended by CMC’s staff from the Media Office, the Media Monitoring and Licensing Departments, the Legal Department, as well as by representatives of the Board of Commissioners. In addition to CMC, the UNESCO project is also building the capacity of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) and of the independent media sector, in order to enable them to play their respective and complementary roles in providing stakeholders with timely, accurate and impartial information during elections. CMC, together with IHEC, is one of the key Iraqi stakeholders engaged in the UNESCO-led Media Elections Project. The Communications and Media Commission of Iraq was established in June 2004. It has an exclusive authority to license and regulate telecommunications, broadcasting and information services in the country. The UNESCO project, Support for Enhanced Media Coverage and Monitoring of Electoral Processes, is scheduled for two years and will end in December 2011. ![]() George Papagiannis (UNESCO Office for Iraq) presents the Media Elections Project to the representatives of CMC.
