UNESCO’s Office for Iraq, in collaboration with Canal France International (CFI), is holding a five-day intensive training course on Reporting on Environmental Sustainability: Water-Iraq. The training is taking place from 18 to 22 December 2010 in Erbil (Iraq) as part of UNESCO’s mandate to strengthen free, independent and pluralistic media, and communication for sustainable development.
The training course in Erbil focuses on the following issues:

  • Sustainable development as an international concept, with particular reference to environmental issues;
  • Sustainable development as framed by the environmental challenges (in particular water), as pertaining to Iraq and the surrounding region;
  • Environmental reporting in line with international journalistic best practices; and
  • Creation of a network and online forum for media professionals committed to environmental journalism.

  • The training is facilitated by international media experts from Canal France International and the Environment Research Centre at the University of Baghdad. Participants are learning both theoretical and practical approaches to reporting on environmental issues and sustainable development in the Iraqi context.

    This training is conceived as part of UNESCO’s mandate to support the capacity building of media to enable them to better cover the issues related to environment and sustainable development. UNESCO strives to establish enabling frameworks to increase media content that contributes to strengthening people’s understanding of sustainable development and climate change. Providing assistance to media organizations, creating greater awareness of education for sustainable development, and increasing media and information literacy are also part of this mandate.
