EFA 2011 Global Action Week Celebration in Iran

Progress is made, but further efforts are needed

There is still a huge gap globally for “Education for Girls and Women”, for which UINESCO takes it as subject of campaign for 2011 EFA Global Action Week. In Iran, however, important progress has been made, as statistics show that the parity for primary and secondary education has been well observed in line with what is expected by one of the six goals of Education for All (EFA) programmes.

That is one of the important highlights of message delivered by Mr. Qunli Han, Representative of UNESCO at the ceremony of the EFA Global Action Week 2011 in Tehran. The event took place in Ministry of Education’s auditorium, on Saturday 30 April 2011, under joint cooperation of Ministry of Education Center of International Affairs and Schools Abroad together with UNESCO Tehran and Iranian National Commission for UNESCO.

“When it comes to basic education in I.R of Iran, I wish to pay my respect to Iranian girls and women for their endeavor in education, and the support from the government and families,” noted Mr. Han. He also reminded, however, that more effort still need to be undertaken to continue this development as well as to further improve equality education for girls and women and create better opportunities. He also noted the gap on literacy rates among women and men in Iran, also to be addressed under EFA programmes.

He continued by saying that the total primary education enrollment has been recorded very well so far and the education communities can truly feel proud of. The total secondary education enrollment has also been good. “However we need to be cautious about the dropout students and take all the necessary actions to avoid dropout for whatever the reasons. There are still differences in terms of access to basic education between major cities and rural communities, especially those living in remote areas,” he said.

He also reaffirmed UNESCO Tehran’s commitment to further cooperation with the Government of I.R. Iran especially the Iranian Ministry of Education towards assisting less privileged countries in the region to achieve EFA goals set for 2015, including supporting the rebuilding of education capacity in Afghanistan. He referred that each year, the Ministry of Education and UNESCO organize joint technical training for Afghan experts in the field of technical and vocational education.

He mentioned need to improve quality of education through development of indicators of quality of education, teacher training, curriculum development, education planning, education statistics and governance.

Officials from the Government, education related institutions and UNIC and UNFPA from United Nations families participated in the opening of Global Action Week of EFA Week and a Panel of Expert. Among the officials from Ministry of Education were Dr. Aliasghar Yazdani, Vice Minister and head of International Affairs and Schools Abroad, Dr. Golamreza Karimi, Deputy for International Affairs and Ms. Fatemeh Ghorban, Deputy Minister for Primary Education. Many teachers and students also attended the event.

The Panel reviewed all EFA goals and the commitment and progress of Islamic Republic of Iran to achieve these goals. The Panel agreed that, while there is truly and remarkable progress in EFA in Iran, such as school enrolments for both boys and girls reached to 98%, the country will need to further improve its education service and learning environment, including lifelong learning, more effective TVET and use of ICTs for education.

Each year EFA Global Action Week is celebrated around the world, including in I. R. of Iran to mark the importance of this global commitment, inked in 2000 in Dakar by 164 countries to achieve EFA goals by 2015. During this week, many events will be organized in schools and educational institutes around the country, drawing everyone's attention to the EFA goals and reminding all parties concerned, including Government, education planners, curriculum developers, educationists, as well as teachers and students of the importance of achieving these goals in 2015.
