M.Sc. Programme

The East African Institute for Fundamental Research offers a two year MSc in one of the three disciplines, Condensed matter Physics, Physics of the Solid-Earth and High Energy Physics. In the future more areas will be available.

The masters courses are designed around the ICTP Diploma programme with an extra first year which is meant to bring students from various countries to a uniform standard. The first year is common to all fields (except for numerical methods). The second year is devoted to the specialised areas and culminates with a thesis. One can see some of the detailed second year courses here

On successful completion the student will be awarded an MSc from the University of Rwanda. It is expected that a fair proportion of the students will go on to PhD programmes either at the University of Rwanda or other institutes around the world.

There are scholarships available for Rwandan students and a small number of scholarships for students from other countries.

To be eligible the applicant must:

  • Have either recently obtained a B.Sc. degree or equivalent, or a higher degree, or they are in the process of completing such a degree.
  • Have the main subject of the degree being physics or a closely related area.
  • Be fluent in English (as all courses are in English)

The selection of candidates is based on their university record and academic recommendations.

The courses start in September 2017 and the deadline for applications closes on the 31st January 2017. The on-line application is here
