Increasing awareness about women's rights through multipurpose access centres

Training on community media will take place from 29 to 30 March 2010 at the Okangwati Multipurpose Youth Resource Centre in Namibia. It will be hosted by UNESCO, in partnership with MISA Namibia, the Namibian Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, the Kunene Regional Council and the Polytechnic of Namibia.
The two-day workshop will be attended by 40 participants and will focus on:
organisational structures and strategies,
participation of community stakeholders and users,
ICT and media literacy,
elaboration of an operational strategy document, and
communication strategy for multipurpose community access centres.
This activity is part of UNESCO's contribution to the promotion of community participation in sustainable development through community media. It is being implemented in the framework of the UN Joint Gender and Development Programme entitled “Setting things right towards gender equality and equity”. The Programme aims at protecting the rights of women and girls by increasing their awareness and capacity through community media.
The next week workshop is a follow-up to the assessment of the status of community centres in Namibia, which recommended to conduct training activities for women with the focus on information and communication literacy. The assessment also suggested that the overall management of multipurpose access centres should be done by the community and for the community. In line with these recommendations, the UNESCO workshop will contribute to the elaboration of an operational strategy document to be shared with other community centres in Namibia.
