World Teachers’ Day 2011 : participate in the UNESCO debates online! World Teachers' Day 2011 will be celebrated, as it is annually, on 5 October. Numerous events are organized at UNESCO headquarters in Paris and worldwide to honour teachers. This year, UNESCO proposes an online discussion on "Teachers for Gender Equality” from 12 to 23 September.
An initiative called New Generation (NewGen) Asia aims to develop the capacity of the next generation of young leaders from key populations to get their voices heard and their needs met in national and regional HIV programmes. The initiative engages young people as leaders rather than participants and empowers them through a multi-pronged capacity-development programme.

Nearly 100 delegates from 18 Asia-Pacific countries met in Bangkok this week to discuss how to provide more and better sexuality education for the region’s millions of adolescent girls and boys. A pioneering project to educate illiterate women about HIV & AIDS and reduce their vulnerability to the epidemic has been launched in mid and far western Nepal. Illiterate women in Nepal are at high risk of infection because they cannot read preventive health care information. The project targets mainly spouses of migrant workers, who are often unknowingly infected by their husbands who have had sexual relationships with sex workers while working away from the marital home.
The Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality (SACMEQ) was established in 1995 as a network of 15 Ministries of Education: Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania (Mainland), Tanzania (Zanzibar), Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
It is paramount that new HIV infections are stopped. The AIDS transition, the point where fewer people are newly infected than are placed on treatment, is within our grasp. The transition depends, however, upon decisive and innovative action to achieve universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support by 2015—in line with the Millennium Development Goals.
