World Teachers’ Day 2011 : participate in the UNESCO debates online! World Teachers' Day 2011 will be celebrated, as it is annually, on 5 October. Numerous events are organized at UNESCO headquarters in Paris and worldwide to honour teachers. This year, UNESCO proposes an online discussion on "Teachers for Gender Equality” from 12 to 23 September.

NewGen Asia: Strengthening the Voice of Tomorrow’s Leaders

An initiative called New Generation (NewGen) Asia aims to develop the capacity of the next generation of young leaders from key populations to get their voices heard and their needs met in national and regional HIV programmes. Video and Report on the Asia - Pacific Regional Consultation on Sexuality Education and Gender Now Available

On 18 - 21 July 2011, UNFPA, UNESCO and UNICEF jointly organised the Asia Pacific Regional Consultation on Sexuality Education and Gender, with a Special Focus on Adolescent Girls. The meeting offered a platform for countries to share their evidence and experience and gain knowledge on how to effectively invest resources in sexuality education programs and policies.

Education for all ‘fails’ transgender test

As advocacy for gender equality has rightfully strengthened, it has failed to acknowledge that there are more than two genders; male and female, thereby rendering transgenders invisible.
Yet in order to fully realize “education for all”, we need to recognize that gender equality should be truly universal to all human beings — including transgender people.

Asia Pacific countries talk sexuality education in Bangkok

Nearly 100 delegates from 18 Asia-Pacific countries met in Bangkok this week to discuss how to provide more and better sexuality education for the region’s millions of adolescent girls and boys. The focus of the meeting was finding better ways to reach both in and out of school adolescents with vital health and sexuality education, and to find ways to overcome barriers to its implementation.

Campaign launched to protect illiterate women from HIV & AIDS

A pioneering project to educate illiterate women about HIV & AIDS and reduce their vulnerability to the epidemic has been launched in mid and far western Nepal. Illiterate women in Nepal are at high risk of infection because they cannot read preventive health care information. The project targets mainly spouses of migrant workers, who are often unknowingly infected by their husbands who have had sexual relationships with sex workers while working away from the marital home.

Pupil and teacher knowledge about HIV and AIDS in Southern and Eastern Africa

The Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality (SACMEQ) was established in 1995 as a network of 15 Ministries of Education: Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania (Mainland), Tanzania (Zanzibar), Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

High Level Meeting on AIDS - United Nations General Assembly: How do we reach the vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths?

It is paramount that new HIV infections are stopped. The AIDS transition, the point where fewer people are newly infected than are placed on treatment, is within our grasp. The transition depends, however, upon decisive and innovative action to achieve universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support by 2015—in line with the Millennium Development Goals.
