    These guidelines aim to empower health authorities, governmental and nongovernmental organizations as well as community groups seeking to develop a productive relationship between traditional and conventional (that is modern or biomedical) health systems. The guidelines were conceived to help envision, plan, design, implement, evaluate and scale up initiatives that involve collaborating with traditional healers for HIV prevention and care in sub-Saharan Africa.     This report presents the main conclusions reached at a consultation on traditional medicine. The meeting focused on the status of research work and associated activities in the field of natural products including methods for the selection of natural products with a view to the search for anti-retrovirals. It looked at 'in vitro' methods for screening natural products as well as legal and ethical issues concerning traditional medicine.
