While IPPF’s ‘Framework for Comprehensive Sexuality Education’ sets out clearly our rights-based, gender-sensitive and sex-positive approach, along with the content of comprehensive sexuality education, the specific methodologies to deliver and measure effectiveness are not well defined. This report aims to pull together IPPF’s current thinking on these new territories.

In July 2011, UNFPA, UNESCO and UNICEF jointly organised the Asia Pacific Regional Consultation on Sexuality Education and Gender, with a Special Focus on Adolescent Girls. The meeting offered a platform for countries to share their evidence and experience and gain information and tools on how to effectively invest resources in sexuality education programs and policies. The Roundtable Discussion on the Philippine Situation and Response Analysis on HIV, Drugs and Sexuality aimed to present and validate the research findings of the Draft Report on the Philippine Education Sector’s Response to HIV, Drugs and Sexuality prepared by the University of the East and commissioned by UNESCO Jakarta. Throughout the world, many adolescent reproductive health professionals, schools, clinics and other youth serving organizations have developed and implemented a wide variety of sex and STI/HIV education programs to reduce unintended pregnancy and STIs among young people. Some of these programs are based on a written curriculum and are implemented with groups of young people. Connections is an adolescent and parent programme that helps girls and their mothers to become more confident and comfortable to talk about gender, relationships and sex. The programme provides information and life-skills around issues including puberty, growing up, relationships, dating, sexuality, pregnancy prevention, gender rights, alcohol use and parent-to-adolescent communications. The programme covers both the biological aspects of sex, and broader relational aspects such as peer and romantic relationships, love, reproduction, gender rights, HIV, risk-taking and peer influence. …
