Numerous epidemiological studies from the early years of the tragic HIV and AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa identified formal education as a risk factor increasing the chance of infection. Instead of playing its usual role as a preventative factor, as has been noted in many other public health cases, until the mid-1990s educated African men and women had a higher risk of contracting HIV than their less educated peers. This led to ambivalent policy about the efficacy of education as a possible social vaccine against new infections in this region. …

The report documents an effort of UNDP South East Asia HIV and Development Project in collaboration of FAO and the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to mainstream HIV resilience building in the agricultural sector through an experiment called Farmer Life Schools (FLS). The FLS approach translates farmers' analytical thinking from plant ecosystem-base into analysing an individual's life as a human ecosystem - with factors that strengthen or weaken his/her resilience to adversities, which includes HIV.
The main objectives of the survey were to study knowledge and attitudes of the medical professionals of Nepal about HIV epidemiology and control, HIV transmission in health setup, HIV testing of patients, and management of HIV positive patients. The questionnaires were sent to various hospitals of all the five regions of Nepal including the central referral, teaching, maternity, children, and infectious disease hospitals of Kathmandu.
