Much research attention has been devoted to understanding the relationship between education and riskier sex-related behaviors and HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. While in the early 1990s researchers found that increases in education were associated with a higher incidence of HIV/AIDS, this relationship appears to have reversed and better educated people, especially women, appear less likely to engage in riskier sex-related behaviors and have a lower incidence rate of HIV/AIDS. …
The aim of the study was to explore young people's understanding and knowledge about why protective measures against HIV/AIDS, malaria and unplanned pregnancy are not taken by those at risk in Uganda. The study results were that the participants (all from secondary school in Kanungu Uganda) could identify reasons why preventive action was not taken. These reasons included misconceptions, the inpracticability of abstinence, and fear of side effects of several key interventions. The article argues that there is an apportunity to improve preventive measures by tackling these issues. …

Gender and sexuality have long been recognised as key factors affecting the dynamics of the HIV epidemic. Issues vary across communities and countries, but power imbalances, harmful social norms, violence and marginalisation affect women, men, girls, boys and transgender people across the world, limiting their ability to prevent HIV infection. There are a growing number of HIV and broader health initiatives that not only highlight gender issues, but also aim to change harmful norms and practices. These are called "gender-transformative" approaches. …
Over the past decade, Pacific Island countries have seen a rapid increase in HIV related activities that have largely been disconnected from broader sexual and reproductive health (SRH) activities. International research indicates that the synergies between HIV and SRH can be better used to improve health outcomes. However, despite a number of high level calls for greater linkages and integration, as well as the creation of avenues for this to occur, very little linkage and integration has yet been achieved at either policy or service levels in the Pacific region. …

Five analytical domains emerged: primary partnerships, love and romance; secondary partnerships; pregnancy/parenthood; condom use/prevention; and contextual influences, including schooling and future aspirations. …

In theory, SRH care incorporates the prevention, detection and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) - including and perhaps most pressingly, HIV - into other SRH services. In practice, however, many organizations that work in SRH service provision fail to incorporate STI/HIV prevention or treatment into their roster of services and programs, or they provide these services separately from other SRH services. …
