UNESCO hosts High Level Debate on Right to Communication at WSIS Forum 2011

“Right to Communication: New Social Media and Social Transformations” is the theme of the High Level Debate, organized by UNESCO on 18 May at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2011 (16-20 May; Geneva, Switzerland). The Debate brings together stakeholders from all over the world to provide insight into the right to communication and its ethical, legal and policy implications.
Access to information and the capacity to be able to enjoy the right to communication are essential to the realization of greater equity in a global society. Free flow of information and right to communication are premises for democracy, good governance and greater well-being.
The UNESCO Debate will encourage brainstorming and discussions on a wide range of dimensions of the right to communication, related to the WSIS Plan of Action. It will ultimately inform the ongoing implementation process of WSIS and contribute to putting the potential of ICT at the service of ethical conduct and cyber-citizenship.
This year’s Debate aims to explore the crosscutting emerging issues, related to WSIS Action Lines, within the UNESCO strategy framework of building inclusive knowledge societies. This is the second High Level Debate that UNESCO organizes at WSIS Forum. The 2010 event focused on the theme of social networking.
