About 200 people attended the Workshops on the Application of Media Development Indicators (MDIs) organized by UNESCO’s Quito Office, in collaboration with CIESPAL and the Universo Foundation. The seminars, which took place on 12 January in Quito and on 14 January in Guayaquil, aimed at collecting inputs on the methodology of implementation of MDIs.
The workshop brought together a large group of representatives of the Ecuadorian communication sector: private, public and community media, university professors and students, lawyers, civil society organizations, journalists’ trade unions and concerned citizens. The British expert on human rights and freedom of speech, Andrew Puddephatt, coordinator of the International Experts Group that defined MDIs at the international level, participated in the event and presented the MDI’s objectives and background to the Ecuadorian public.
The application of MDIs in Ecuador, funded by IPDC and implemented by UNESCO’s Quito Office in collaboration with CIESPAL, aims at assessing the status of media development in the country. It is expected that the application of this methodology will enable to measure the level of development of all communication sectors, from the legal framework to the existing infrastructure. The seminar collected inputs from the participants on the methodology proposed for the implementation of the MDIs in Ecuador, the first country in the region where this instrument will be applied.
The workshops consisted of plenary sessions and simultaneous working groups, each of which focused on one of the five categories considered by MDIs. The events raised significant interest and attention from all sectors, but particularly from the media. The inputs collected during these events will now be incorporated into the final methodology and the application will begin. It is expected that a Report on the Development of Ecuadorian Media will be published in spring 2010.
