History
Founded 26 Dec 1957, Cairo (Egypt), as a peoples' organization, following steps taken at the governmental level by Prime Ministers of Burma (currently Myanmar), Ceylon (currently Sri Lanka), India, Indonesia and Pakistan at meetings from 28 Apr to 2 May 1954, Colombo (Sri Lanka), and 28-29 Dec 1954, Bogor (Indonesia), and at Conference of Afro-Asian Nations, 18-24 Apr 1955, Bandung (Indonesia). Originally known as Organization for Afro-Asian Peoples' Solidarity. First Constitution, on the basis of a draft prepared by First Council, 1959, Cairo, was adopted by 2nd Conference, Apr 1960, Conakry (Guinea); amended by 11th Council, 1974, Baghdad (Iraq); supplemented by transitional resolution of constitutional character adopted by 13th Council, Mar 1981, Aden (Yemen). Second Constitution adopted May 1988, Delhi. Present Constitution adopted 2008, Hyderabad (India).
Aims
As a non-governmental, pluralist and democratic organization, an integral part of anti-imperialist and peace-loving forces: act for the democratization of international relations; establish the New International Economic Order and the New International Information and Communication Order; uphold human rights; protect the environment; promote gender equality and women's rights; complete elimination of nuclear biological and other weapons of mass destruction.
