1. Using a different lens for HIV and AIDS education. Research method and pedagogy using participatory visual methodologies

   This publication draws on a two day workshop, Research Method and Pedagogy Using Participatory Visual Methodologies, held 4-5 April 2011 in Port Elizabeth. The workshop focused on visual participatory methodologies used across various disciplinary areas, including education, and particularly HIV and AIDS Education. The sections of this publication include the use of drawing, photovoice and storyboard and the visual ethics.

   Soul City, a multi-media health project in South Africa has been effective in imparting much needed information on health and development, and in changing attitudes and behaviour as well. Soul City works primarily within South Africa but the TV programme has been shown in a number of African countries as well. In the last two years Soul City has worked on a sponsored education booklet called Choose Life, aimed at 12-16 year olds in Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia. 1,331,000 copies of the booklet will be printed and distributed in the four countries in seven different languages. …

3. Teachers and HIV and AIDS: reviewing achievements, identifying challenges: symposium report of the UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on Education, 15 June 2009, Limerick, Ireland

   On 15 June 2009 the UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on Education convened a Symposium on "Teachers and HIV & AIDS: Reviewing achievements, identifying challenges" in Limerick, Ireland. The Symposium aimed to review progress in involving teachers in the HIV and AIDS response and to consider how this review can improve efforts to achieve Education for All (EFA) and the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) to "halt and reverse the spread of HIV" by 2015. …

According to this presentation, an effective HIV/AIDS education programme must focus on reducing sexual risk-taking behavior based on psycholgical and participatory learning theories which were effective in other areas. The program should provide a model of an practice in communication and refusal skills.
