    This report presents the main conclusions reached at a consultation on traditional medicine. The meeting focused on the status of research work and associated activities in the field of natural products including methods for the selection of natural products with a view to the search for anti-retrovirals. It looked at 'in vitro' methods for screening natural products as well as legal and ethical issues concerning traditional medicine.

    This final report of the First International Congress on Traditional Medicines and HIV/AIDS describes the proceedings and presents the major contributions made by participants. The speakers strongly recommended the recognition of traditional medical practices and encouraged collaboration with traditional health care providers.
