HIV/AIDS and education
This paper examines the literature on how HIV/AIDS has impacted teachers and other education personnel in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d`Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal. The findings show that the HIV/AIDS situation is serious in all the countries studied although the prevalence rates range from 0.5 in Senegal, 5.8% in Nigeria and 11.8 % in Cameroon (UNAIDS, 2003). This booklet is the first in a series of publications that address key themes of UNESCO's work on HIV & AIDS and the education sector. It provides an overview of why HIV and AIDS are important issues for the education sector, identifies weaknesses in current policy and programming responses, and highlights evidence gaps.
The overall purpose of this literature review was to identify key themes and gaps in knowledge emerging from literature available on HIV/AIDS and higher education in Africa and in Uganda in particular. The key themes and gaps in knowledge identified will form the basis for the design of an in-depth study, which will explore the impact of HIV/AIDS in selected higher education institutions in Uganda and the responses of these institutions to the pandemic.
