Objectives: To describe the sexual and reproductive behaviour of adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly 15- to 19-year-olds. Methods: Using DHS/AIS data (2000–2010), nine indicators of adolescent behaviour and one of adult attitudes towards condom education for adolescents were described for 24 countries. Indicators were disaggregated by gender, urban/rural residency and educational status, and time trends were described. Results: Up to 25% of 15- to 19-year-olds reported sex before age 15; this proportion shrank over time in many countries. …
Providing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education in schools is a cost-effective way of reaching young people because the majority of adolescents are enrolled in school. This policy brief describes the current state of SRH education in schools in Egypt and presents the rationale and recommendations for improvements. It highlights portions of UNESCO’s guidelines related to SRH education and describes the pioneering work of some nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) working in this field in the country.

This systematic review looks at levels of STI awareness, knowledge and perceived risk of school-going adolescents in Europe. Fifteen studies were included, all of which cross-sectional and conducted among 13 to 20 year olds. Awareness and knowledge varied depending on gender. Awareness on HIV/AIDS was high (over 90%) but low for HPV (5.4%-66%). While knowledge that condoms protect against STIs was high, adolescents viewed it as an interim contraception method before using the pill. In this study, knowledge did not translate into safer sex behavior change. …
This document provides a literature review on programs in developing countries that have addressed or challenged gender-based violence with a link to the reproductive health/HIV sectors. For this review, programs addressing both adult and adolescent populations were eligible for inclusion and an effort was made to identify programs that involved men.
The International HIV/AIDS Alliance have carried out a literature review of the sexual and reproductive health rights of adolescents living with HIV. The study found that adolescents living with HIV have largely been left out of the national responses to HIV/AIDS in low-income settings. Their needs differ from those of adults living with HIV and they face many challenges, including serious service access barriers that require greater attention and advocacy. In most low-income countries health systems have not been designed and do not have the capacity to meet their specific needs. …
