In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the HIV epidemic has been on the rise since 2001. Although the overall HIV prevalence in the region is still low, the rise in new infections has put MENA among the top two regions in the world with the fastest growing HIV epidemic. The rise in the estimated number of people living with HIV in the region presumably is the result of an increased HIV prevalence among key populations at higher risk and a forward transmission of the virus to a larger number of individuals who are generally at lower risk of infection.
In this Guide, we focus on strengthening the curriculum dimension known as education for learning to live together (LTLT), which incorporates areas of life skills, citizenship, peace and human rights. The Evidence and Rights Based Planning and Support Tool for SRHR/HIV-Prevention Interventions for Young People is a tool for project managers who either design new programmes or who evaluate existing programmes. The tool focuses on the planning of SRHR/HIV prevention interventions for young people and consists of 28 indicators for successful/effective education programmes. The indicators are based on existing theories and evidence and are based on the Intervention Mapping framework.
This report presents the findings of a desk study undertaken to assess the integration of gender and human rights in HIV-related documents and processes in Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
