It is written with low and middle-income countries in mind, but it will also be a useful resource for high-income countries. This monograph is designed to promote positive attitudes toward care and support for people living with AIDS. It reviews a range of approaches and discusses how different options can be made more widely available even in resource-poor environments. It is also intended to guide planners and policy-makers on how best to utilise scarce financial and human resources for health in general, and HIV/AIDS care and prevention, in particular. It recognises that most activities are still aimed at reducing HIV transmission as a priority focus. However, as HIV/AIDS becomes the leading preventable cause of disease globally, comprehensive strategies to cope with the ever-increasing burden of disease are urgently needed. The monograph is also useful to individuals and groups in need of background information on approaches to care and support including some idea of cost and efficiency where known.
