The aim of this case study was to document the effects of HIV/AIDS on the University of Nairobi personnel, operations and resource use. The study was of a descriptive nature and relied mostly on qualitative methodoloies such as interviews, group discussions and the analysis of documents.
The HIV/AIDS Education Policy of the Ministry of Education was developed as part of the national response to the epidemic. The Ministry has a major responsibility to reduce the spread of HIV infection by addressing HIV/AIDS in its education programmes. This is done through infusion/integration of HIV/AIDS issues in the school curriculum and related training of the teaching force. This report commissioned by ADEA sets out to understand how HIV/AIDS affects African universities and to identify responses. Based on case studies at 7 universities in 6 countries (Benin, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia) it compares and analyses the findings.
